What Is Reiki?

This is a common question for me as a Usui Reiki Master Practitioner and Master Teacher. Here is my answer plus some helpful information as well.

What is Reiki?

Reiki may be translated to "Rei" God Consciousness ~ "ki" Life force energy.

Reiki allows healing to occur by introducing God Consciousness ~ "Rei" energy to disrupted areas to allow the balance and flow of original creation.  Beautifully designed for whole wellness, our bodies bring healing to themselves as they are balanced and flow with "ki" as created and designed.

Reiki, which is guided by God consciousness, cannot harm, as our Creator knows ours needs better than we ourselves.  Because the practitioner is allowing him/herself to be used as a vessel for Divine service, there is no fear or danger in the healing.  In fact, Divine guidance brings together a Reiki practitioner and client.  In this manner a client is divinely blessed for seeking healing as is the Reiki practitioner for offering the divine gifts bestowed on him/her.

Life force energy ~ "ki", flows in, through, and around our bodies.  Within the physical body the ki flows through pathways known as chakras, meridians, and nadis. Around our physical bodies ki flows in the field of energy known as the aura.  Ki nourishes us supporting our vital functions.  When our ki is disrupted it can cause diminished function in one or more aspects of the emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual bodies.

Reiki treats the whole person ~ body, mind, emotions, and spirit allowing an opportunity for whole healing. Dis-ease and distress occur when one or more of our bodies ~ emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual ~ are blocked, imbalanced, not in alignment, or not in agreement. Because Reiki works on the whole person the opportunity exists for healing of not only the symptoms of dis-ease and distress but the source of them as well.

What to Expect from your Reiki Session

The Reiki I offer is a prayer based Usui Reiki. As you come into the room for your session you will hear relaxation music playing softly and the lights will be dimmed.  Reiki is offered while fully clothed so you need not be concerned with being asked to remove any clothing.  You will however, be asked to turn off and place electronic devices on a table in the room as these may interfere with your results.

Reiki may be offered to you while you lay on a massage therapy table or while seated in a comfortable chair.  Each session is unique just as each individual is unique; however, here are some common things you may experience.

During the Reiki session you may experience coolness, warmth, tingling or any combination of these. Most clients experience a sense of peace and relaxation during the session. Some experience a burst of energy immediately following the session while others want a nap. Many people fall asleep and rest well during the session.

Every person receiving Reiki needs to increase their intake of pure water for at least the following three (3) days.  Since Reiki unlocks blockages within the life force energy (ki), it may serve as a gentle detoxification therefore requiring increased water intake to flush the toxins out of the system. After your session you will receive any additional after care instruction as well as recommendations for follow-up appointments.

After Care

Because Aromatherapy, Chakra Balancing, Craniosacral Therapy, Reiki Therapy, and Trauma Release Therapy allows the body to release blockages in the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual bodies it can act as a gentle detox.  Healing may continue for up to several days after a treatment. Following the recommendations below can improve the benefits you experience from your session.

HYDRATE! This is the number 1 thing you need to do. Drink at least 6/8 – 8 oz. glasses of purified water every day for at least three (3) days following your session, preferably seven (7) days.  Toxins cannot be eliminated if you are not flushing them out with water. If you detest plain water then add fresh squeezed citrus to your water. If you need it sweet, use pure Stevia.

REST. As your body is releasing toxins it may require more rest than usual.

NURTURE. Be gentle with yourself and require that those around you do the same. Avoid negative, harsh, or stressful environments or people as much as possible. Spend time with positive, supportive, loving friends and family. Allow your inner child to play and dream.

HONOUR. Honour this time as a time of renewal and growth. Take in nature, exercise, meditate, affirm, choose loving and positive thoughts.

EAT Healthy! Choose nutrient dense, whole foods which support your detox process.

ELIMINATE chemical laden foods, processed foods, alcohol, soda, cigarettes, fried and fatty foods. Highly sensitive or over-burdened systems may benefit from the 30 day Modified Elimination Diet. (Find it in the Resource Center)

Symptoms you may experience during your gentle detox include:
Fatigue
Joint pain or aches
Headache (mild)
Intestinal discomfort
Increased bowel movements

These symptoms should only last 2-6 days after which you should experience a wide array of benefits which may include:

Increased energy
Increased stamina
Increased strength
Increased creativity
Increased focus
Increased positive outlook
Increased coping ability
Increased decision making ability
