The Importance of Breath

Breath is Life. Most of us spend our lives breathing just enough to survive. What do you imagine would happen if we chose to “consciously” breathe ~ to balance the breaths we take and become aware of each life giving drop of oxygen? One of the first things I learned about breathing in my journey to wellness was that a high oxygen environment is the killing fields of all disease. With that in mind I set out to not only breathe but breathe to heal ~ to be well ~ to be whole.

There is much scientific research and ancient wisdom regarding the importance of breath. First to share some of what I have found and then what I have learned. In this it is my sincere hope that you too will learn to balance breath, to choose to consciously breathe for health ~ to be whole.

In the article “10 Ways to Detoxify Your Body” Gaiam Life, the number 5 recommendation is to Breathe Deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through the entire body. 

In the article “Deep Breathing…It’s Easy When You Don’t Try” from TLC they explain that breathing oxygenates every cell of your body from your brain to vital organs. Without sufficient oxygen your body becomes more susceptible to health problems. In contrast, deep breathing raises levels of blood oxygen, promoting health in many ways from stimulating the digestive process to improving fitness and mental performance. Even alternative health icon Dr. Andrew Weil says “if I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip, it would be simply to learn how to breathe correctly.”

It is obvious that breath is not only important to life but important to a healthy life.  One may breathe and survive but how does one breathe for a healthy life?   The difference between breathing to survive and breathing to live well is in the balance of breath.

Balanced Breath

Balanced Breath is exactly what it says…balancing the inhalation and exhalation of breath.  This is not necessarily a natural act and in most cases requires conscious training to become habit. Why is balanced breath so important?  Because balance in all things creates an environment in which wellness can exist.  Balance in breath is an opportunity to achieve balance in all other things.  If one can achieve balance in breath one may achieve balance in life itself.

Wellness Benefits of Lavender

The Latin word Lavender translates "to wash."  Perhaps it is because the aroma seems to wash the senses.  My all time favorite use is as a room spray.  Having read of the antibacterial properties I added some lavender oil to our body & linen spray and use it to wash the air.  It makes the air easier to breath, very beneficial when suffering from a head cold.

There are many uses for lavender, some I have tried and some I haven’t.  What follows is a list of beneficial uses with some notes about my personal favorites.  Please let me know what you favorite uses are.

Many herbalist prescribe a lavender oil for eczema and psoriasis. Add lavender oil to a mild carrier oil for a leave on skin treatment.  In a warm bath a few drops is said to relieve the itch and any neuralgia pain.

Rub the leaves of the plant onto the skin for a wonderful natural insect repellent.   I have used dried lavender buds as a moth repellant in my clothing for years.  It soothes my senses instead of giving me a headache like standard moth balls.  Not only do I not find moths in my clothes but I typically don’t have problems with other pests either.

Nervous System: Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves and helps in treating migraines, headaches, anxiety, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. Its refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness and increases mental activity.
  • Sleep: Lavender essential oil induces sleep and hence it is often recommended for insomnia.
  • Pain Relief: Lavender essential oil is also an excellent remedy for various types of pains including those caused by sore muscles, tense muscles, muscular aches, rheumatism, sprains, backache and lumbago. Massage with lavender oil provides relief from pain in the joints.
  • Urine Flow: Lavender essential oil is good for urinary disorders as it stimulates urine production. It helps in restoring hormonal balance and reduces cystitis or inflammation of the urinary bladder. It also reduces any associated cramps.
  • Respiratory Disorders: Lavender oil is extensively used for various respiratory problems including throat infections, flu, cough, cold, asthma, sinus congestion, bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. The oil is either used in the form of vapor or applied on the skin of neck, chest and back. It is also added in many vaporizers and inhalers used for cold and coughs.
  • Skin Care: The health benefits of lavender oil for the skin can be attributed to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. It heals wounds, cuts, burns, and sunburns rapidly as it aids in the formation of scar tissues. Lavender oil can be added to chamomile to treat eczema.
  • Hair Care: Lavender essential oil is useful for the hair as it can be very effective on lice and lice eggs or nits.
  • Blood Circulation: Lavender essential oil is also good for improving blood circulation. It lowers blood pressure and is used for hypertension.
  • Digestion: Lavender oil is useful for digestion as it increases the mobility of the intestine. The oil also stimulates the production of gastric juices and bile and thus aids in treating indigestion, stomach pain, colic, flatulence, vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Immunity: Regular use of lavender essential oil provides resistance to diseases.
Cautions: As with many other essential oils, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using lavender essential oil. It is also recommended that diabetics stay away from lavender oil as it raises blood sugar. It may also cause allergic reactions to people having sensitive skin. Some people may also witness nausea, vomiting and headaches due to usage of lavender oil.

Trauma Release Therapy



Trauma Release Therapy –
A Unique Resolution for Trauma Associated Symptoms

We have each experienced traumatic events in our lives. In the moments surrounding a traumatic event our body records and time stamps all the information of the event including associated feelings, sensory perceptions such as sounds, smells, and pain. Even when the conscious mind represses the information of the event the associations of the trauma have been time stamped within our body memory.

As we travel through life similar experiences, a smell, music, a date, or location, which the body associates to the original trauma, can trigger us to relive the event all over again to some degree either consciously or unconsciously.  In that moment we are living both in the present and reliving the past at the same point in time and the trauma of the event is being expanded to include the new event that triggered the memory. In this manner the original trauma is compounded by layers of subsequent traumas.

The body reacts to trauma in many and various ways. If you do not reconcile the original trauma you may experience fears related to your trauma. Furthermore, the original trauma may be expanded to include associated traumas.  Layering trauma upon trauma the body may respond to your fears by developing symptoms such as associative pain, disease, phobias, allergies, and disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD.

The Ancients have known and Common Alternative Medicines have demonstrated that we are capable of experiencing the past while being in the present.  When you smell bread baking or cookies fresh out of the oven or when you hear an ambulance siren, what memories come rushing in?  Your body does not know time.  Therefore, as you recall a memory; your body is living in the present and in the moment of the memory at the same time.

Knowing that we live in the present and relive the past in the same moment is the premise of Trauma Release Therapy. This unique therapy offers the opportunity to release the original trauma, its related associations and symptoms stemming from them.  Just as a pebble dropped in water creates many ripples, so Trauma Release Therapy creates a cascade of healing by treating the original trauma.

You can treat the symptoms of a trauma forever and allow the trauma to remain or you can treat the trauma and be free of the trauma and its symptoms. The choice is yours. Trauma Release Therapy offers an opportunity to treat the original trauma and be free of it and the symptoms your body associates to it.

Is Life Stressing You Out? We all know balanced living reduces stress and makes life more joy filled but accomplishing balance in an unbalanced world is a struggle.  The Living Balanced Workshops teach you to find balance in your unbalanced world and open yourself to joy and fulfillment.

The Living Balanced Series are one month sessions meeting weekly to equip and train you to achieve balance. Each series focuses on one area to achieve balance in.  Twenty eight consecutive days of anything forms a habit or releases a habit.  The Living Balanced Workshops make use of this fact to move balanced living from a concept to a habit.

Balanced Breath ~ Life is born of Breath. Without breath life ceases. Breath that is balanced offers peace, healing, stability, joy. Furthermore, a highly oxygenated body is a disease killing machine. The Balanced Breath Series teaches you to “mindfully” breathe in balance bringing life sustaining oxygen into the core of your body and releasing the stressors your body holds on to in day to day living. 

Balanced Thought ~ Thought becomes action. What you think is received by your subconscious mind as what you believe, desire, and want to be real.  Out of thought the subconscious mind goes to work to create your reality. Therefore, your thought creates your reality. The Balanced Thought Series teaches you to “mindfully” choose your thoughts, to exchange those thoughts you want to release, and alter new thoughts to achieve harmony between what you say you want and what your thoughts tell your subconscious mind you want. (An example of this might be: you say, “I want a healthy love relationship.” Your thoughts say, “A healthy love relationship will never happen for me because ___ fill in the blank.” You can say you want all day long but until your thoughts are in harmony with what you say you will not achieve balance in creating the reality you say you want.)

Balanced Energy ~ Most of us are familiar with the symbolism of yin and yang – female and male energies. Symbolically these energies are balanced equally creating harmony within the unit.  In reality however, very few people live in balance with their feminine and masculine energies. The Balanced Energy Session teaches you to identify imbalances in the feminine and masculine energies, acknowledge the positive aspects of both, and achieve and maintain harmonious, balanced yin and yang energies.

Balanced Emotion ~ We are, by nature, emotional creatures. We feel, therefore we experience emotion. Many of us learn through training and environment to express or contain emotions in ways that are at best imbalanced and at worst destructive. As a result, we may even feel a victim to our emotions. The Balanced Emotions Session teaches you to reclaim control of your emotions, choose new methods of expressing emotion, and balance your emotion responses.

Balanced Connection ~ We are spiritual beings inhabiting a physical body. Living as spiritual beings in a physical world is challenging to say the least. Our choices and the choices of others along with societal demands and expectations can create a false sense of separation from our spiritual aspect. Through this disconnect we experience imbalance and disharmony. The Balanced Connection Session teaches you how to reconnect to your spiritual aspect, balance your spiritual and physical aspects, and maintain a harmonious balance between who you are spiritually and physically.
